No standing charge: This tariff does not include a daily standing charge. Consumers are only charged for the energy they use.
Off peak: This tariff is suitable for consumers with a two rate meter and who use most of their electricity at night to heat their house and/or produce hot water. There are several variations, the most common of which is an Economy 7 meter where the rate for using electricity during a seven hour period in the night is much cheaper than the day rate.
All suppliers offer Economy 7 tariffs. In certain areas, Economy 10 may be available, which offers three different pricing rates throughout the day.
Direct debit discount: Suppliers may offer a discount to consumers who pay their bills by direct debit, as their accounts are cheaper to administer.
Dual fuel discount: Suppliers may offer a discount to consumers who purchase both their electricity and gas from the same company.
Prompt pay discount: Suppliers may offer a discount to consumers who pay their quarterly bills promptly.
Prepayment meter harmonisation: Some suppliers have equalised the prices charged to prepayment meter customers with those who pay quarterly by cash, cheque or standing order. Prepayment meter consumers may save money by switching to one of these suppliers. Electricity prepayment meter prices are variable dependent on the distribution region, while gas prepayment prices are standard across Great Britain for all suppliers, with the exception of npower and Scottish Power which are also variable.
