Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has two green tariffs:

RSPB Energy is a green source tariff that matches each unit of electricity you use with a supply of renewable power back into the electricity grid. 90% comes from large hydro-electric facilities and 10% from sources that qualify under the Renewables Obligation. SSE retires 10% of Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) over and above its statutory obligations. This removes ROCs from the market, which may increase the price that renewable generators receive.

SSE also donates £10 per fuel to the RSPB if you switch to this tariff plus a further £5 per fuel for every year you stay on the tariff. It costs about 5% or £16.50 on average (excluding VAT) a year more than standard SSE tariffs.

SSE’s better plan is a green source tariff with the company matching 100% of the electricity you use with a supply of hydro-electric power back into the electricity grid. All of the electricity comes from the company’s large hydro plants. The company will help better plan customers reduce their energy usage, with rewards available for doing so - a 10% reduction in annual energy consumption earns you a £15 energy credit off your next bill, a 20% reduction earns a £25 credit. All customers on the tariff will receive a free, easy-to-use monitor that demonstrates your household’s electricity use patterns, helping you to work out ways to cut down on electricity consumption.

Customers will also receive a better plan information pack with details of discounts and special offers available from SSE on a wide range of energy efficiency measures. Any better plan customer who purchases loft or cavity wall insulation, central heating protection, A-rated electricals or condensing boilers from SSE will earn energy credits of between £10-20 per product off their future bills. Additional £10 credits can be earned by signing up to paperless billing or a free wiring check. The tariff is available to dual fuel or electricity-only customers.

SSE operates under the brand names Southern Electric, SWALEC and Scottish Hydro Electric.
